Gun Range Etiquette

A shooting range is more than a place to fire guns. It is a community where safety, respect, and proper conduct come first. Whether you are new or experienced, good etiquette keeps the line safe and enjoyable.

Safety first

  • Follow all safety rules: eye and ear protection, safe handling, and the range officer’s instructions.
  • Keep the muzzle pointed downrange.
  • Unload when not firing. Keep the firearm unloaded and open when you step away from the firing line.

Respect and courtesy

  • Respect other shooters’ space and lanes. Do not crowd or touch someone else’s equipment without permission.
  • Keep noise down. Avoid loud conversations that distract others.
  • Clean your area before you leave — targets, shell casings, and trash.

Communication

  • Listen to range officers and staff. Their instructions are for everyone’s safety.
  • If you need help, wait for an appropriate moment and ask politely.
  • If you offer help, keep it respectful.

Range-specific rules

  • Know the rules for this range. Start with our Range Rules.
  • Stop immediately when a ceasefire is called and follow the instructions given.
  • Load and handle firearms only at the firing line. When you move, the firearm is unloaded and secured.

For regular shooters

Experienced shooters can mentor newcomers on safety and etiquette with a friendly, approachable manner. Joining range events and looking after shared space builds a culture of safety and respect.

Good etiquette is safety, respect, and proper conduct. This is a shared space — each person’s actions affect the whole community.
